The first free Black republic
On January 1, 1804, in Gonaïves, Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti free. It started in August 1791, when enslaved Africans rose up across the north. Twelve years later they had beaten Napoleon’s army. Haiti became the first nation born from a successful slave revolt.
